Hell-o,
yes, it’s Hanukkah, the feast of light! And like every year I would like to celebrate with all who celebrate today.
And also like every year I will cook a meal from jewish kitchen to honor my jewish friends around the world. This year I decided to make a KUGEL…. yeah duh… efurrybuddy can make a kugel, I know, I know…
butt it’s a Kugel Yerushalmi where pawmade caramel is included and that’s a challenge…
I skip the recipe, it’s above if you click the link, just three things what are impawtant:
First: NEVER… NEVER EVER leave your pan with the caramel alone. Not even when you have to visit the bathroom. It’s better to pee in your pants that’s easier to remove than burnt caramel. Caramel is sneaky, first nothing happens and when something happens it is happened. It’s a nano-second between caramel and charcoal and when you produce CHARCOALAMEL you crib stinks to high heaven like the plague. And you need a new pan. And new caramel for the kugel. And a new crib.
Second: Don’t cheat with the ingredients, yes, a kugel is rich and if that not fits with your diet plan then rather make a salad. If you reduce the fat or the sugar, your kugel will taste like straw. Like ours. Butt it was edible, no worries…
Third: Never leave alone… oh wait we’ve done that one, right? Butt it’s really impawtant… just saying…
So now wash your paws or not, some dirt makes every food special and make your own kugel, it’s really worth it.
You can use nearly any baking pan, we used a simple one, what’s easy to clean, because there are eggs included and that’s like glue…
Viola my Kugel Yerushalmi… and yes, the color is not as expected because my mom cheated with the caramel…
…and whos’ not able to remove it from the baking pan in one piece, is a Khayim Yankel , ha!
…tataaaaa done. Apaws Apaws !
Dig in and add some sweet-sour onion rings and pickles and if you want some maple farmers cheese… and if you are an oik like my staff you can add russian dressing….
… and now light up the night with the candles on your menorah and have a wonderful Hanukkah… best with a fabulous song of the Fountainheads, they are great people and they are the proof that howl-i-day songs haven’t to be kitschy like “O Tannebaum” or acoustic hazard like “Last Christmas”…
HAPPY HANUKKAH TO YA – CHAG URIM SAMEACH!
Happy Hanukkah to you and your family Easy and to all our Jewish friends. That looks like a very yummy spread. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly
I’ve never had a kugel food before. That actually looks kind of yummy. Plus my other favorite food is goose poop, so I may not be the best judge….. Mom says burnt caramel is her favorite smell. When you move out of your house, maybe we will move in!
Love and licks,
Cupcake
Happy Hannukkah to you Easy and indeed all our Jewish friends…you did an awesome job of the Kugel and even with glam nails 🙂 and the song you chose was a perfect one to celebrate love life and the lightness of our world we sometimes forget…you are a special boy indeed….much loves Fozziemum xxxx
to celebrate together is a good way to understand each other :o) and that was worth the ruined pan :o)
Totally agree Easy..what’s a pan or salad bowl or fruit bowl between friends 🙂 xxx
Happy Hanukkah! We will be talking about our Hanukkah feast on Thursday!
we love this time of year and hope all our friends have a great hanukkah
Easy to make a Yerushalmi kugel is no small thing- and your looks AMAZING!! I burnt many a pot before learning not to leave that caramel on its own. I also love your dishes- they are a pattern I have always admired and loved from afar. Happy Hanukkah and thank you from one of your Jewish friends who so appreicates seeing a blog about kugel and Hanukkah. ❤ ❤ ❤
How did Easy not gobble the kugel right off that plate you are holding? Our dog was faster than lightning and it would have been gone in a second. It is amazing! 😀
This time I was faster…. I used the surprise effect to remove it before he got it (yes, that’s mean, I know) :o)
ha ha!! My husband couldn’t believe that Easy did not gobble it right up- he loved the photo 🙂
Easy that kugel looks AMAZING – you and your Mum did a great job as it looks quite delish!!!!! We know what you mean about caramel turning into DUST in one second when you’re making it – you can’t even SNEEZE before it goes POOF and burns up! Glad you had no disasters in the kitchen. We wish all our friends who celebrate Hannukah a very happy and joyous feast………..
Hannukah Hugs, Sammy
Lots of yummy food in this post! My assistant has left the carmel unattended and YUCK …she really shouldn’t be allowed in the kitchen!
That looks so yummy, great job chef Easy, pee your pants,,,,,kill me!
Happy Hanukkah to one and all. Me and MOM just love that you celebrate this most important holiday. If we all shared each others special days just think how wonderful world it would be. And what better way to celebrate than enjoying the yum yum yummmmmy foods of such a special day. All worth it, even worth a burnt pan if we can spread the love and understanding.
Blessings,
Goose

Happy Hanukkah to everyone who celebrates this wonderful holiday! Easy, I cannot believe you made a Kugel…that takes some time and I am not that patient a pup. Just saying. Maybe when it is time for Passover seder I can come visit…that has all the fixings of a feast that I love!

Happy Hanukkah to all those that celebrate.
What’s with giving us explicit instructions and then telling us that you cheated on your own instructions?
Such clear instructions…we don’t think our Mama could pay attention to the caramel and we would need a new crib for sure!!

This has to be the BEST Chanukah post EVER! We’re Jewish and don’t even make all of the delicious dishes that your Mom has made, nor do we know all of that Hebrew!! Hi Y’all!
Oh that looks so yummy! Happy Hanukkah!
Long ago, before my time, when my Humans traveled more, they discovered Jewish delis and Greek restaurants. Both are known for great food. Then they returned to the south…southern cookin’…good…but yearned for a REAL deli. (It doesn’t take long to spoil my Humans when it comes to food.)
One day they met a Jewish gentleman who was from New York City. He told them where to find “the closest thing to a New York Jewish deli” in the south land. My Human Papa says it isn’t the “real McCoy”, buy close enough…especially since we are many, many miles from New York!
Good cookin’ Easy!
Y’all come on by,
Hawk aka BrownDog
You are wonderful Easy. We all want the light. Also good advice about not following recipes properly. Yum, I wish I could have some! 😀

We didn’t know what a kugel is, but yours looks pretty tasty to us – and Happy Hannukah to all!!!

Shalom Rebbe Easy!! What a fabulous blog about Chanukkah!!! Thank you so much…that Kugel has me drooling….hahaha!!that is one of the ONLY Jewish dishes I can make properly (using my Nanna’s recipe of course!).
I use eggs, brown sugar, cinnamon, raisins & glazed cherries…it is a SWEEEEET kugel…hmmm I have some egg noodle calling me!!!
Love you sweetie, Sherri-Ellen & Siddhartha who likes playing with Dreidls….
Easy, what a great idea your mom has making Jewish dishes…I would like to do that too…never thought of it. The Krugel sounds too complicated though….I need something similar to bacon and beans….any ideas?
(((Shoko)))
a bean kugel…beans look a little like noodles and there is always room for bacon :o) and you will not need that darned charcoalamel :O)
Hi Easy
My mum has not been reading all the blogville blogs — she had more surgery on her eyes!!!! Anyway, she LUVED your kugel recipe, etc. Years ago when mum was married and lived in Cleveland, Ohio, she had a recipe for a kugel that had cream cheese, sour cream and cherry pie filling (among other ingredients) soo that it was more like a desert than a side dish. Everyone LOVED it and kept asking her for the recipe. Unfortunately in the years since then (since 1979) amidst all the moves, the recipe got lost…..
Anyway — thanks for the Hannukah wishes and happy holidays to you all.
Cookie (Cody in Tucson’s follow up dog after her going to Rainbow Bridge at the end of July)
p.s. We do not have a blog — one of these days (bol)
