PENTECOST SUNDAY
.
.
Today is Pentecost, from greek:Πεντηκοστή [ἡμέρα], Pentēkostē [hēmera], “the Fiftieth [day]” – a feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the twelve Apostles of Christ. But primal it’s a jewish feast in the calendar of ancient Israel celebrating the giving of the Law on Sinai. This feast is still celebrated as Shavuot. The word Shavuot means weeks, and the festival of Shavuot marks the completion of the seven-week counting period between Passover and Shavuot. Shavuot commemorates the anniversary of the day God gave the Torah to the entire nation of Israel and the Torah is compared to milk by King Solomon, who wrote: “Like honey and milk, it lies under your tongue”.
.
.
We decided to prepare a jewish meal for today, because we think the jewish kitchen is very interesting. You can discover or re-discover meals you know and prepare them on another way. And because it’s the feast of the milk we prepared some traditional jewish Shavout dishes.
.
.
Best for this feast are the BLINTZES, maybe similar with pancakes or Crepes. You can choose between common cheese blintzes or you can fill them with whatever you want. RECIPE is here.
We used Crepes Breton, they are prebaked and you can buy them here everywhere, because my mom is lazy.
.
.
We prepared our blintzes with smoked salmon and a cream which is for preparing Flammkueche, an alsatian (NOT the dog!) delicacy, because it’s perfect seasoned for smoked salmon. As sidedish we prepared a salad with green asparagus, lettuce, tomatoes, corn and slices of white peaches. Even me got a blintz, filled with cottage cheese. To little – but mom said I had a half of a cow with carrots and rice and that would be enough … PAH! AS IF!
.
.
Mom set the table in white (feast of the milk) and predicts a painful dead to all dribble-guys, so I decided to use the “great” table on the floor and dad had to run the gauntlet – or to eat the gauntlet? Who cares, it’s his jacksie not mine….

For dessert – please hold your breath! – we prepared a… a CHEESECAKE! Yeah! But this time a traditional strawberry cheesecake, so we hope the after- and side effects will be not as hard as usual. Mom prepared the base from smashed cookies and butter and for the dressing we used cream cheese and this darned strawberries I hate. In case that my mom believes in youtube-tutorials we had no more gelatin, mom used it to look stupid for weeks with a half liquidated eyebrow for a wonder-facial mask. But we are the masters of all disasters situations and used custard powder for an instant mousse and this was much better than the gelatin-stuff, because the smell of this stiffing-stuff is awful. Like the smell of this strawberries from hell – did I mentioned that I hate strawberries? Yup! They are made from straw and so is the taste…Count me out for this red boogers.. No way!

Later we had a walk through my village, which we had to interrupt in case of pressing business (the cheesecake). Instead to spend the Pentecost-Sunday on my bed I’m now on standby with a pack of TP-Rolls.That’s not the kind of career they predicted on my cradle… Who want’s to be the Potty-guy?… NOT ME!

HAVE A HAPPY PENTECOST, A HAPPY SHAVUOT or A HAPPY SUNDAY ALL!
HAVE A HAPPY PENTECOST, A HAPPY SHAVUOT or A HAPPY SUNDAY ALL!
Well Easy, that cheesecake does look quite yummy (even with those red boogers on it!!) but the minute I read the word CHEESECAKE in your blog I thought “UHOH – I hope they have lots of toilet paper in the house!!” Well, the REST of the feast your Mom prepared looks quite delicious – I do hope that you enjoyed the whole experience of the special meal on a special day!
Kitty Hugs and Toilet Paper!
Sammy
It was really good :o) But I think all the “pressing business” came from the red boogers – I guessed it! Mom said they were totally tasteless ( ha! like Straw! as I said) but at least tasteless is better than bad taste :o)
Dang, I was all ready for a snooze but now I’m hungry!
Oh that’s bad – Sorry Brian… with an empty tummy no one can sleep ( you will get treat-nightmares!) :o)
I am fasting for blood tests Easy……not easy dare i say hehehe 🙂 nice one with the TP though 🙂
I’ve read it … and I post about food -oh my… but at least you are spared from the “cheesecake-aftereffects” :o)
I never get them! must be something in the Australian recipes thats consequence free 🙂
…or my mom has “explosive” hands :o)
Wow Easy your mum is well adventurous. We can’t believe mum is venturing into the cheesecake arena again. LOL. What no mandarins or food poisong? Have a serene Sunday.
Best wishes Molly
Oh yes. she did it again … humans are crazy … hope she has a nice afternoon in the bathroom – hehe
Send us some of that Easy we are starving this end xx00xxx
Mollie and Alfie
I can send you the strawberries – they are harmless and I can eat the cheescake :o)
Pe-es we will pass on the cheesecake..Just in case..Bawahwaawww xx00xx
I can send you a pack of tp-rolls too – no preoblem :o)
It sounds like so far so good with the cheesecake, E. I did not know that strawberries were made of straw. I think I apparently like straw!!
Love and licks,
Cupcake
I think we will have a funny sunday :o) I’m sure they are made of straw… like liversausage, which is made from liver… and dogfood is made from … uhoh!
Uh-oh. *gulp*
What a wonderful blend of food concepts. The Pentacostal blintz. Being dairy and gluten free I have yet to find an alternative for one of my favorite dairy meals.
It was really tasty – and easy to prepare – except the cheesecake which was a secret weapon like always in my crib :o)
Easy I love how your family puts their whole heart into what the day is. Love it! I don’t know why, but this is the first I am hearing of your dislike of strawberries. I LOVE them. I have my very own plants that I get to pick from everyday (if the birds don’t steal them first). I hope the cheesecake is not of the evil sort.
Blessed Pentecost Day to ya Brother.
Goose
I tried one of the red boogers and I had to make a face for hours… uh … like straw(berries). now mom wants to place this darned things everywhere to avert me – how mean can humans be? Have a wonderful Pentecost day too :o)
So glad you don’t like strawberries as that leaves more for the rest of us. Sounds like a lovely meal. I’m off to church now and hope that you have great Pentecost day.
janet
Have a great Pentecost too – with a lot of strawberries :o)
I’m going to ignore the food, it’s 7:25 and I haven’t had breakfast yet so all this food makes me hungry (all though there are no green beans and the cheesecake could use a little hot sauce). What’s with that road? I thought the town just had everything repaved but it looks like it needs it again. It must have been a Chinese crew, a month after repaving, it needs it again.
The street guys disappeared to nowhere after they threw some dirt in their holes. But I have good news: on the black board they noted: completed in june (without the year). Either it is still finished and has the “used” look or we have to wait till june mañana. I will add some hot sauce to the cake, could be interesting to see the “final result” :o)
Oh Dog! That sure looks good! I shouldda invited myself over for lunch!
Oh great come over – we have tuna for supper and I found a lot of treats in my cupboard :o)
Yummy, that all looks so delicious you’ve gone and unfocused me completely. Wonder if I could convince hubby to whip up some pancakes with salmon and cream cheese for me?? Not looking good, I’m afraid. His reaction seemed something like yours was to strawberries. Apparently I completely misunderstood the concept of marriage when I rushed into it. I thought it meant I’d have a personal chef
I agree (and my mom too) the concept of marriage is like a jungle full of climbers. First the dad’s promise you a black SUV and a bed of roses and later they grumble even about a new pair of shoes…:o)
Easy you and your peeps are so adventurous and we love going on these culinary trips with you. One of Mom’s friends from her youth was Jewish. Mom was fortunate to be able to attend several feast at her home and learn lots of interesting things. AND MOM and her friend shared the same first name Cecilia which was not all that common back in the dark ages. MOL MOL MOL
Hugs madi your BFFF
We like it too to learn about traditions and life of other cultures, it’s so interesting and you can discover a lot of things :o) I think it’s cool to have the same name like your friend – so you can share all things, even the name – good thingy!
Hey Easy, thanks for sharing that. What a special and interesting post. I am Christian and have lots of Jewish friends and colleagues, so I loved the way you tied the two together. Happy Sunday to you and the family.
Thanks :o) I think all together is always the best , isn’t it?
Definitely 🙂
What a lovely meal you had. Hope the cheesecake was kinder to you this time round!
Sadly the cheesecake was a biological weapon (like always) … I’ll bet the darned strawberries were the reason,
but the entertainment factor was not bad hehe
Easy your mum REALLY put out a BEAUTIFUL Table and OH the Foods.. they look worthy of being in a MAGAZINE. WOW!! VERY VERY Impressive.
Thanks – but her best trick is always the entertainment we have with her food – specially with cheesecake LOL
I like the cheesecake!! OK I m with you on the strawberries MOL!!!
Thanks for the support … can you believe that this humans messed upt this nice cheesecake with the “red boogers”? Humans are silly…
Licks on the cheesecake! And the blintzes too. YUM. So, you had to walk off all the carbs afterwards through your village?
haha we tried it – but accidentally we used “speed-carbs” today f or the cheesecake :o)
Mummy is drooling over that cheesecake and whee gotta admit those strawberries look nommy to us!
xxxx
It all looks DELICIOUS! Shiner says she will eat your helping of strawberries Easy, she loves them!
Really? Then we could be a perfect team: Strawberries for Shiner – Cheesecake for me :o)
What a wonderful feast you all had – we bet that cheesecake was delish!!! Mom said Mass today was so beautiful in celebration of Pentecost. The choir was especially wonderful with lots of extra musical instruments. The parishioners gave them a huge round of applause at the end of Mass.
No cheesecake here, but we did get some decent chicken nibbles. Now we ware waiting on the bad storms to get by us. Overhead now.
Woos – Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning
Sadly here dogs and cats aren’t allowed in church (only a bazillion of pigeons) – how unfair… I hope the storm will steer clear of your crib, maybe you can chase the bad storm away?
Sounds like you had a really interesting Sunday and I hope you left the Cheesecake alone. I always learn a lot from your meals and preparations 🙂
It was really interesting – specially the effects of the cheesecake :o)
I’m so late getting round to all the blogs but by now the cheesecake effect has probably worn off. Isn’t memory a wonderful thing? Cheesecake will be forever seared in our…….memories as being the harbinger of doom – so many trees sacrificed!!
Hahahaha you’re right Zena … cheesecake will be forever seared in our memories – but not in the stomach of my staff :o)
Are you all still OK? Do we need to send an ambulance?
Thanks – all survived. Now I think we have some time to relax and to restock our TP-rolls :o)
The cheesecake looks lovely, but I am not sure how I feel about the custard in it?!
The custard was ok… but this strawberries had a bad effect :o) (not for me haha)
Yum! I am reading this during breakfast and my bagel just isn’t looking as appetizing!
Piggy kisses,
Katie and Coccolino the mini pig
… oh let’s swap the food, you get all the straw-thingies and I get the bagel …
Please, Easy, give us some signs of life! Are you and your staff still alive? You must survive because I’m sure that your garden will turn into extremely fertile after this night!
I have to reveal a really hurtful secret: my favourite meal is strawberry cake! It looks like this here, but is a different recipe: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_s450p2sS-wc/S93tm81-fuI/AAAAAAAACMA/vy5VRYvA5R0/s1600/epertorta.JPG
We all survived – except the cheesecake :o) Mom likes strawberries very much but even with such a tasty recipe like yours she will create a weapon of mass destruction. I’m glad she isn’t working in a bakery :o)
What a cool meal..well, except the strawberries for Easy 🙂 I think you must have forgotten to mail us our invitation! 🙂 Boy if Ma cooked ever…well you’d need more than the TP! Maybe even a surgeon! 🙂
Poor Max – I have tears in my eyes (with laughing). But even the TP-disaster was hard enough :o)
mmmm that cheesecake looks yummmy!!
The look was good – the aftereffects… priceless :o)
Oh, my mom loves those blintzie guys and she hasn’t had them in ages. She says thank you for a good reminder. Also, the cheesy ones are delicious with sour cream and raspberry jam. NOT strawberry, of course. But you can give me your extra strawberries, Easy. I think they are tasty and sweet 🙂
Oh Remy this strawbwerries were totally tasteless (not even the taste of straw) – we should prepare our own cheesecake, maybe filled with seafood?
Now that would be the most deliciousest cheesecake ever!!!
I used to eat strawberries when I was a puppy. I always ask for them now, but if they’re stupid enough to offer me one I act offended!
That’s the best thing what you can do for strawberries – I swallowed one (accidentally) uuuh my 7 stomachs were not amused…
Send some crepes over here x
oh with cheesecake-filling ;o) ? Or with mouse-topping?
Chocolate and banana 🙂 oh my mouth is watery now lol
oh chocolate and banana and cream as big as the mount everest- that would be great. Mom swoons – she planned for her supper only an apple hahahaha
