MEET MERLIN

.
Merlin, was one of the greatest wizards ever, probably THE greatest – sorry Professor Dumbledore, bad for you Mr. Gandalf. He was born as MYRRDIN (in welsh myr/mer= crazy, senseless and dyn= person, man – just the perfect name, huh?) in Carmarthenshire, Wales and should be the son of an Incubus ( a male elf) and a nun, related to a royal family. (There are a lot of different versions of Merlin and his life , I’m not sure which one is the correct version)
Date of birth: who knows – mañana
.
He was on file at 8th or 9th century the first time  in Historia Brittonum and wellknown as the advisor and thaumaturge to the Royal Household of
King Arthur, who lived in the 5th and early 6th century.
.
But even a great wizard hasn’t always the control about his magic wand and Merlin fell in love to the Lady of the Lake, named
Viviane or Nimue. He followed her to her Forest Broceliande where she first pretended endless love, till he revealed to her all his magic power then she bewitched him that he fell in a deadlike sleep and she banned him into a hawthorne hedge under a great rock. Maybe that was the medieval version of: Not tonight, Darling, I have headaches . After removing Merlin, Viviane entered the Bridge of Mystery, betrayed her love to Merlin and disappeared into a cloud.
.
While Merlin slept under a rock in the Forest of Broceliande, his magic power became famous, his person legend and his financial background fabled through the centuries. In late nineteenth century , farmers from thereabouts thought, that they can find some wonga in Merlins pocket and placed a homemade bomb under Merlins rock. Sadly the bomb-pastry wasn’t baked right through and the blasting power was as pitiful as a fart. Only the rock got a crack, what the people now use as Merlin’s mailbox till today. No, my staff weren’t the bomb plotters ,they were born later and have an alibi
.
.
The Forest of Broceliande is full of magic places, you can visit the

the Valley of No Return – is where Morgan-Le-Fey, King Arthur’s half-sister, is reputed to have imprisoned her lovers until Sir Lancelot finally freed them.

.
the Garden of the Monks – a community of monks who were punished for their decadent lifestyle with the transformation into rocks, called The Jardin aux Moines
 .
merlin3
.
the House of Viviane – A small grouping of standing stones called the Hotié de Viviane can be found at the end of the valley.

.
the Grave of the Giants – a group of stones, more than 3500 years old, named as a megalithic tomb, in french Le Tombeau des Géants, probably the burial place of a local chieftain
.

.
the Guillotin Oak – a refuge for the Abbot Guillotin, who hid in the huge crevice which can still be seen in the trunk, during the troubled times of the French Revolution, in french Le chêne de Guillotin.

the mailbox for your wishes

.
We visited the grave of Merlin, which is decorated by his fans with flowers, garlands and wreaths, where I looked into his mailbox slot, but he wasn’t at home.
I wrote him a message, to take good care of all citizens of blogville and placed it in his mailbox.

the source of eternal youth

the source of eternal youth

.
Then we went to the source of eternal youth. The legend says, the water in the basin contains the tears of Viviane, who although beeing older than dirt was always looking like a 15 year old girl. Who drinks from the source will never get old. Butt before we will throw our anti-age creams away and cancel the appointment with Mr. Botox, we should think twice. To get not older means not inevitably that we will be young an beautiful… and if you ask me, you only will get the Jakarta quick step or fleas in your stomach… or both – but maybe that’s the story behind the saying: Beauty knows no pain?
.

.
Ok, let’s go: There is a place with stacked stones, made by Merlin’s fans. The meaning of the stone-pyramids or stonemen is: NONE. They are common in many cultures, have sometimes a religious meaning (in Tibet) or a geographic (Alpes or Scandinavia). But most like there they have no relation with anything. Butt if you want you can build one and make a wish while building or for Merlins or Vivianes honor – if you like it? Why not.

Merlin's secret lab?

Merlin’s secret lab?

.
We found an interesting thingy there: probably this is Merlin’s secret Lab? Not really high-tech – but interesting. I tried to take a closer look on this interesting place but my staff said: Weimaraner+magic Lab=Weimageddon. So, NOPE!
 .
.
After all the Forest of Broceliande ( in maps named as the Forest of Paimpont) is a nice place for hiking or a picnic. It’s frequented by self-appointed wizards, fans of King Arthur, who celebrate every year a procession through the Forest, Gothics and dogs with their staff. There is magic everywhere what has different influence on people. Some become inspired, some get eternal youth or the runs and some lose their keys and become bursting for a pee… If you plan a trip to Britanny don’t miss this place (and don’t forget to visit ME!)

  1. Easy what a MAGICAL place!!! So this is where your Dad’s keys MAGICALLY disappeared huh? Well, I think it looks fascinating and an incredibly swell place to go for a walk and explore. I would love to visit there one day and you better be sure that if I was EVER able to visit anywhere near you I’d stop by for a visit at your house – and I’d bring you a MAGIC MERLIN cheesecake for us to celebrate our visit with!

  2. What a fantastic place, those keys are gone forever.. Loved the photo’s it sure is a mysterious 🙂 xx00xx

Easy I have always LOVED Merlin and I LOVED reading the history! OMD that “Merlin’s Mailbox” was too cool!!!! I would love to visit a magical place like that!

    • It’s really a great place, sadly we haven’t had enough time to visit all places ( dad and his “pressing business”) or to have a picnic there. It’s such a fun to visit all the people there in their costumes :o)

  4. Wow Easy that really is a magical place. We love the idea that Marlin has a mailbox and that you thought of Blogville. Have a Marvellous Magical Merlin Monday.
    Best wishes Molly

    • Thanks Molly, hope you have a funny monday too. Of course he has a mailbox, with a bazillion of wishlists – but I’m afraid he is a little behind with reading all his inbox :o)

  5. Thanks for the photo for Monday. Sorry you didn’t get to explore more but be assured, if I ever get to Brittany, I’ll be coming ’round for a visit!

  6. Merlin made many mothers mad, maybe magic messes Mrs. minds. Oh well. Thank you for the great tour. It was magic. Say hello to your handlers for me

  7. dogloverofmax@gmail.com says:

Easy you always put a smile on my face! Love the “not tonight” ! If we ever get to go there you will be our FIRST stop without question!!!

  8. kolytyi says:

    What a beautiful trip!
Do you think that bacteria and fleas living in the Source of Eternal Youth have an eternal life, too?
There must be a close connection between your visit in the Valley of No Return and losing your dad’s keys, as well as between finding the mouse in your bedroom and your visit in Viviane’s House. The poor guy seems to be fallen in a deadlike sleep, too.

  9. owyheestar says:

Dusty says “Woof” he would like to wet a bush in this garden. (Oops) Interesting stuff, and lots of grand advice. Thank You

    • I think Dusty would like it. But the best places for an autograph are the milestones along the way. They get a shower in second intervals from all the dogs there :o)

  10. Goose says:

Now that was very interesting. I just had a thought: I could go get Bert and he and I could head on over. Why Bert? Well he is very good at finding things, he is a SAR dog after all. He even found my MOM’s medical thingy-ma-bib that some how came detached from her stomic and was lost in the woods. Miss Vickie had Bert search for it and he found it. So we could come and find the keys. Well Bert can find them, you na dI can just kick back and have a good chat and laugh.
    Blessings,
    goose

    • I considered too to call Bert. At first he could be the only one who will find the way back to this forest . But we should have a tent and a lot of marching rations, it’s a very large area… hope the keys aren’t disappeared too in a cloud :o)

  11. My human always wanted to go to Broceliande and never went before leaving France 😦 So she says thank you for the virtual visit 🙂
    Have a great week!
    Purrs

  12. I loved this post, for real.
The whole King Arthur thing has always been a fascination of mine.
    Really nice pics too.
I’ll send this to our Orca’s Book Club.

    • I like the King Arthur Saga too, wish I could travel to all related places. Maybe we can visit the forest for the annual parade too – think that’s funny. Easy want’s to be one of his knights: Sir Weimalot :o)

  13. Priscilla says:

Oh, my mom loves Merlin. She loves magic but she can’t make any magic. Well, okay. Sometimes she thinks she makes some magic and I am awed but I just pretend in order to make her happy. Shhhh…

    Eva

    • Thanks, Eva :o) Merlin and his contemporaries are really very interesting and every legend has a piece of truth inside :o)
I do the same sometimes to make my human happy – we dogs are good souls – aren’t we?

  14. Great post. We have missed your Magic Mondays the past few weeks! Hope you’ve been well 🙂

    Piggy kisses,
Katie and Coccolino the mini pig

  15. finnhoward says:

Very magical! That’s a pretty awesome place to visit. A fountain of youth and a roundtable for the knights? Just super cool.

  16. Gizmo says:

Easy my momz is so jealous now…She loves the stories of Merlin and has watched a bunch of Camelot and Merlin DVD’s of TV shows a couple weeks ago…she would love to visit these places, with YOU of course!

    • Oh that would be fine ! (maybe you can bring one of the gators, when you’re comin?) it’s really a magic place and there are a lot of places, related with the King Arthur Saga around.

  17. Sarge says:

Hello Easy, darling! What a whimsical and delightful post. We crabby girls love magical stories and anything King Arthur and Merlin is fabulous to us. We’d love to climb around that rock and right on into the mailbox for an exploration. A fountain of youth would be perfect to keep a young, healthy look. Merlin lives his life backwards we hear, getting younger instead of older. What wonderful fun!

  18. Brian says:

No wonder the mystical one captures everyones imagination!!!

  19. PigLove says:

OMP (Oh my pig) – that was a wonderful, spectacular place Easy. I am so piggy jealous. I want to come over and go through it with you. Now I understand about dad’s keys – I personally think Merlin took them 🙂 AND, I am so in awe of the bravery that it took to go through the woods – did you see that ghost?! That was pigawesome! Mom laughed at “Darling, not tonight”. She thought that was hilarious. I’m not sure why and she wouldn’t tell me. She told me to go ask daddy. He laughed too and said to go ask mommy. Sigh – I guess I’ll find out when I get older, huh? XOXO – Bacon

    • Oh Bacon, I understand… humans are silly. Mostly then they start to talk about bees and flowers… how boring :o) I would like it to walk with you through the forest – there is no grass on the way, so no worries about your feet :o)

      • PigLove says:

hot pig! I am in. I think it would be such a snort of a good time to investigate the mysteries and ghosts of this Merlin place. I would even overlook ‘nature’ to do it with you. Just think of the fun! XOXO – Bacon

  20. Kyla says:

Nothing about the dogs there? They must have been the real power behind the throne.

  21. Madi and Mom says:

Easy you make Mondays Magical and fun and we learn things….
    thanks
    hugs madi your BFFF

  22. Will and Eko says:

Merlin WAS the greatest – until you showed up. Eko and I will hopefully make it across the Atlantic sometime soon!

  23. Easy, you’ve hit the nail on the head again! Whenever Dad or Mom lose their keys/ wallets etc you know exactly where to find them. In the lady’s hand sticking out of the lake 😀 and of course, you being a dog can sail there free of charge and claim the finders fee!

  24. Two French Bulldogs says:

Cool! Mom is headed to the water of the eternal youth
    Benny & Lily

  25. This is all so very interesting, Easy. Can you believe that Mom had wanted to name Thunder Merlin?

Woos – Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning

    • That would be a great name, maybe with this name he could do magic? But Thunders sounds great too, specially for a nordic dog… my staff named the huskies Frosty (like this snowman-guy) and Chipy :o)

  26. LifeOfBun says:

Easy you stayed so cool in that last picture with a ghost behind you! 😮 Magic is so exciting and eerie at the same time!!

  27. Frankie Furter and Ernie says:

THAT was VERY much INTERESTING, Easy… BUTT.. messin with Magic kinda Scares the Poops outta us.

  28. Sagira says:

How cool to have such a magical place

  29. Very interesting stuff Easy. I guess I don’t know a whole lot about Merlin. That place does look really pretty and fun to visit though!

    • For me it was a great place for walking and hiking, without cars and fences and all this annoying human-stuff :o) But it’s really a magic place, even if Merlin wasn’t at home :o)

  30. I would love to visit that magical forest, and you too of course! Thanks for the great magic monday post Easy, I never knew that I could learn more from a Weimaraner than I did in all of grade school! :-p

  31. Nylabluesmum says:

    • Sadly the water-thingy is a fake. Mom drank it last year and she is still the same old mom. I it would work, a bottle would be on the way to you and to all friends in Blogville. I drank it too and I’m very childish now. But mom says that’s normal for me :o)

      • Nylabluesmum says:

BTW did your wish come true? BOL
    Sniffs,
    Molly the Golden

  33. Oh you lucky thing Easy. Hubby will be very jealous when he hears about this. He loves magic and loves Merlin and, well, everything such like. Bet he wishes he was a wizard but I can guarantee you he is not. I’d have got all sorts of things done if he were

    • To be a wizard would be great sometimes :o) But even Merlin failed with all his magic… It’s really a nice place, hope we can visit all the other magic places here too (and if I’ll find Merlin’s wand I will send it to your hubby)

  34. Wow so cool.Iknew about Merlin but I didn’t know he was actually real, or at least there was a good chance he was. Those pictures were really cool, I enjoyed this little adventure!

  35. Misaki says:

What a cool place to visit. Easy, you sure are lucky! When you go back maybe they’ll be a key tree grown from your lost keys??

  36. Very cool place! Looks like lots of fun!

  37. Clowie says:
